Day 1 - NaNoWriMo 2023
In trying to bring some joy back into my life, I’ve foolishly decided to give NaNoWriMo (national novel writing month) a try once more. I highly doubt I can manage the necessary 1,667 words a day to get to 50,000 words by the end of the month, but at least it will get me writing on my novel again.
To that end.
A list of things I did today while writing my book:
Double-checked the publication dates of Agatha Christie’s novels.
Figured out the approximate placement of Disneyland on a 1920s map of Los Angeles for…reasons.
Double-checked where the phrase “arsenic in the sugar bowl” came from and then decided it didn't matter that it was a plot point from a novel published in 1962. I’m still using it in a book set in the 1920s. It’ll make sense eventually. Get over it.
Found out that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Favorite thing I wrote today:
“Hell hath no fury…” Avery mused. Though in this case no one had actually been scorned…unless you counted the fact that Avery hadn’t given her the results she wanted. She sighed and leaned back in her chair, eyes finding the suspicious stain on the ceiling that looked a little too much like blood spatter, in her professional opinion, for her comfort. She had gotten the office because the former occupant, also a private detective, had ‘ended his lease suddenly’ and she didn’t like to speculate too much on what the landlord had meant by that.
And while I didn’t do this today, here’s some fun character art I made using Canva’s AI generator.

Yes, I will be getting back to the podcast soon. But I wrote over 1000 words of fun fiction today and that’s improved my mood immensely.
I’ll likely continue to update you all on the NaNoWriMo progress this month, unless you all send me nasty messages telling me “I didn’t sign up to hear about your stupid fiction writing!”*
*please don’t say that, you’ll hurt my feelings.
