Hobbes is the original author of dark dystopian landscapes in a lot of ways. When he wrote about the Social Contract in Leviathan in 1651 he laid out a bleak understanding of human nature, which he viewed as being inherently wicked and selfish and required a government to control them and keep them from doing harm to each other.
