Robots and Racism: How We Misunderstand Science Fiction
From Perspectives on Pop Culture - March 4, 2022
There are two types of science fiction (well…more, but I’m simplifying). There’s science fiction that fears the future and science fiction that revels in it. Dystopian versus utopian, the Black Mirror to Star Trek’s The Next Generation, if you will. Dystopian science fiction tends to reflect (and again I’m simplifying) a fear of technology taking over and/or authoritarianism via technological means, police states run by smart houses and surveillance cameras. That sort of thing. Whereas, Utopian science fiction tends to view technology in a more positive light, as something that can save us or make our lives better.
Either way, if you watch much science fiction you’ve probably seen cases of the above photo. Where humans tend to treat artificial technology and robots like utter shit just because they can.
