I have worked in marketing and communications for my whole career and yet, I would still allow myself to be “seduced” by the promise of perfect lips or eternal youth in a bottle.

For me it all changed when I returned to writing creatively - for myself instead of my employer or freelance clients. I have an installation artwork (with an artist statement), poetry, and stage performances over the past 5 years, as well as my many talented collaborators, to thank for this life-changing enlightenment.

I also follow the work of the extraordinary (and anonymous) artist, Winnie The Blues Mandela.

Behaviour-changing campaigns are successful when they engage our emotions, not hit us over the head with facts, or reason.

As Winnie writes, “reason doesn’t stand a chance, against the dream of romance.”

You had me at bitchy, and then you said you write science fiction. I’m in! Glad to meet you!🛸✨

More “about” science fiction than science fiction itself, but I might have a WIP or two floating around that I’ll finish one day.

I look forward to reading yours someday. I get story ideas from science articles. Japanese researchers are closer to imaging dreams. I’ve always been fascinated with that since I saw Westworld long ago. So, of course, it’s in my WIP. Happy writing, and I look forward to your podcast, too.

Oh, yes, please!! My awareness of women being treated differently started before I remember (women in the kitchen, kids running around & men in the family room). I remember the "passage of the ERA", opening a bank account & easily going to Planned Parenthood for my woman's health needs. Never thought about the RepubFacists looking over my shoulder, tracking my movements out of state, taking notes on my prescriptions...

I read The Women's Room when I was 20 & saw misogyny everywhere I looked (& tried to not be furious all the time). Married a sociopathic narcissist who passed it down to both of his kids (unrealized by either of them, one progressively getting worse [at same time period of his Dad's life when he slide off the deep end]). And OMG, they REPEALED WHAT?!! Please keep on bitching & turn up the volume!! It's people like you who save my granddaughters' bodily autonomy!!! I cannot believe that I remember when Roe vs Wade was passed & now there's no one to help if you are pregnant in Texas and there's a problem with the pregnancy. Rather than delivering aid, doctors have turned away women who didn't meet the blurry definition of "saving the mother's life" (yes, at least one has bled to death in the parking lot or after they returned home.) I cld say I'm "gobsmacked" at the changes I've seen, mostly for the progress of humanity (I thought). There seems to be a backwards trend in the last decade. Omg, I guess 66 is old, hunh? 😂🤣😅 Thank you for sharing your thoughts w/us ! 💜

And 66 is not old! I’m nearly 36 and I’m just getting started so I hope 66 isn’t old anyway. My mom is older and still kicking ass.

It’s absolutely rage inducing to see what’s happening right now. I’m living in the UK while I work on my PhD (starting in October) in Gender Studies and how women are treated in media that depicts abortions is the focus of my research. Even in medical shows they’ve done such a poor job in most cases, which definitely hasn’t helped the constant debate over the issue. We just have to keep fighting, always two steps forward, one step back because the right wing lashes out whenever we gain any ground.

Sounds like good and necessary research, I hope you do well (& maybe share a thesis after publication?)! I missed out on taking Gender studies, I don't remember anything at all like it being offered (as I needed certain electives for my BA) - I'd loved the opportunity to take a course or 6. 😁

If you like podcasts, I weave a weave in a bit of gender studies to my women's history podcast

Random thoughts for the day's avatar

Sounds ideal. As someone with a social science background I am in favour of a Sociologist commenting live on every news bulletin.
